Interesting & Unique Facts: Forester was the pen name of Cecil Louis Troughton Smith.
He is most famous for writing the Horatio Hornblower series, about naval warfare during the Napoleonic era, and The African Queen. Two of Forester's novels, A Ship of the Line and Flying Colours (both Hornblower novels), were jointly awarded the 1938 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction.

There are many parallels between Hornblower and real naval officers of the period, especially Thomas Cochrane and Horatio Nelson. The name "Horatio" was inspired by the character in William Shakespeare's Hamlet and chosen also because of its association with contemporary figures such as Nelson.

Interesting & Unique Facts: Eliot was really the pen name of Mary Ann (Marian) Evans. She claims to have used a male pen name so that her works would be taken seriously.

She had an affair with a married man named George Henry Lewes. In Victorian England, it was not uncommon for a married man to have a mistress. What was unique in Lewes case was that he and his wife, Agnes Jervis, had agreed to have an open marriage.

Bernard Cornwell

Interesting & Unique Facts: Cornwell met his wife Judy, an American in the United States, but she was unable to move to England. So Cornwell moved to the states and began to write Sharpe. He is stilled married to Judy and still writes Sharpe novels, among others.

There is much controversy over in what order should the Sharpe series be read. Many of these problems stem from the popular BBC movies made staring Sean Bean, who played Sharpe, while Cornwell was still writing Sharpe books. While using the same titles as the books, the movies would combine sections from different books.

Sharpe's Christmas contains two short stories set at different times.

Interesting & Unique Facts: Grafton is the daughter of novelist C. W. Grafton and Vivian Harnsberger, both of whom were children of Presbyterian ministers. Grafton graduated in 1961 with a bachelors degree in English Literature and minors in Humanities and the Fine Arts. After graduating, Grafton held various jobs as a hospital admissions clerk, cashier, and medical secretary in Santa Monica and Santa Barbara, California.

While reading Edward Gorey's The Gashlycrumb Tinies, which is an alphabetical picture book of children who die by various means, she had the idea to write a series of novels based on the alphabet. She immediately sat down and made a list of all of the crime-related words that she knew.

Grafton's novels have been published in 28 countries, in 26 languages including Bulgarian and Indonesian.
She has refused to sell the film and television rights to her books, as her time writing screenplays had "cured" her of the desire to work with Hollywood. Grafton has even threatened to haunt her children if they sell the film rights after she is dead.

Her novels consistently top the New York Times Best Seller list.

For ten years she attempted to write the 'Great American Novel', finishing three manuscripts which she was unable to sell. After someone suggested she try writing romance novels, Evanovich read several romances and discovered that she enjoyed the genre. After finishing her twelfth romance, however, Evanovich realized that she was more interested in writing the action sequences in her novels rather than the sex scenes. Soon Stephanie Plum was born.

Interesting & Unique Facts: McCaffrey was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1968, McCaffrey's short story "Weyr Search", the initial story in the Dragonriders of Pern series, won a Hugo Award for Best Novella. McCaffrey thus became the first woman to win a Hugo for fiction.

At the 2005 Nebula Award ceremonies, McCaffrey was named the 22nd Grand Master by the Science Fiction Writers of America organization. In 2006 she was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame.

McCaffrey currently lives in a house of her own design in County Wicklow, Ireland, and calls her home Dragonhold-Underhill.

Interesting & Unique Facts: Jacques was born in Liverpool, England, and grew up in the area of the Liverpool docks. Jacques has said that the characters in his stories are based on people he has encountered throughout his life. He based Gonff, the self-proclaimed "Prince of Mouse thieves," on himself when he was a young boy hanging around the docks of Liverpool. Mariel is based on his granddaughter. Constance the Badgermum is based on his grandmother. Other characters are a combination of many of the people he has met in his travels.

His novels have sold more than 20 million copies worldwide and have been published in twenty-eight languages.

Now, one new Redwall adventure is published every year. The books are released in Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the USA, and South Africa on the same date. The release date is usually between July and September.

The 22nd anniversary of the Redwall series is this year (2008).

Interesting & Unique Facts: Herbert is best known for the novel Dune and its five sequels. The Dune saga, set in the distant future and taking place over millennia, deals with themes such as human survival and evolution, ecology, and the intersection of religion, politics and power.

His career as a novelist began with the publication of The Dragon in the Sea in 1955, in which he used the environment of a 21st century submarine as a way to explore sanity and madness. The book predicted worldwide conflicts over oil consumption and production.

Dune was serialized in Analog magazine in two separate parts ("Dune World" and "Prophet of Dune"), in 1963 and 1965 respectively. It was then rejected by nearly twenty book publishers before finally being accepted to be fully published. Chilton, a minor publishing house in Philadelphia known mainly for its auto-repair manuals, gave Herbert a $7,500 advance, and Dune was soon a critical success. It won the Nebula Award for Best Novel in 1965 and shared the Hugo Award in 1966. Dune was the first ecological science fiction novel.

By 1972, Herbert retired from writing for newspapers and became a full-time novelist. Herbert died of a massive pulmonary embolism while recovering from surgery for pancreatic cancer in Madison, Wisconsin at the age of 65.

Herbert died before completing the final Dune novel. After his death, Frank's son Brian found the extensive notes his father had made for the final book. Brian Herbert then started working to complete the saga; this involved creating prequels to flesh out of the world. The final Dune novel was a two-part (two book) publication.

Frank always wanted one of his children to follow in his footsteps and he finally got his wish. Brian and his father worked on one book together before his death.

Interesting & Unique Facts: de Lint is a Canadian fantasy author and a Celtic folk musician. It is often said that, along with Terri Windling, he established the genre of mythic fiction which falls somewhere between fantasy literature, and mainstream fiction with a magical realist bent.

de Lint lives in Ottawa with his wife, artist and musician MaryAnn Harris. He published three novels under the pseudonym Samuel M. Key which have subsequently been reprinted by Orb Books under the name Charles de Lint. Many of his later stories center around the mythical North American city of Newford with a regular cast of characters that make cameo and feature appearances.

In addition to being the author of numerous novels and short stories, de Lint is also a poet, musician, artist, folklorist, and critic. His poetry can be found on-line in the Endicott Studio Journal of Mythic Arts.
