Barr was named after the state of her birth. She grew up in Johnstonville, California. Barr first wanted to pursue a career in theatre, but became a park ranger instead. Barr is still a park ranger and is currently stationed in New Orleans.

Each Pidgeon book in the series takes place at a different National Park.
