How to Join:

In order to sustain this wiki, we need your help! Please consider joining our community.
All you have to do to become a member is sign up for a free Wetpaint account.

How to Contribute:

1. You can add authors to a category page.
2. You can add forthcoming books to an already established list.
3. You can add information to an author page.

These are just a fews of the ways you can contribute to this wiki.

The how to...details:

Categories:
Currently, there are three category pages:

Classics
Fantasy/Science Fiction
Mystery

New categories must be approved by administrators because it may (and usually will) involve moving many lists and adjusting author pages. This is a lot of work; administrators will have to ensure that links are not lost when pages are created or moved.

Authors:
In the category page and the 'wiki pages' navigation bar to the left, authors are listed alphabetically (by last name).

example:

Diane Duane
Elizabeth Haydon
Tamora Pierce

Adding an Author:
If you would like to add an author, please add them alphabetically (by last name) to the category page of the genre they primarily write, using the "EasyEdit function on Wetpaint. The author must also be added to the 'wiki pages' navigation bar to the left. To add them to the navigation bar you have to create an authors page using our Author Page Template.

To do this click on the 'Add page' link directly under the navigation bar to the left.
A box will appear where you must name the page. You must name the new page for the author using their whole name.

example:

Nevada Barr

Below that is the option to add keyword tag(s). Tags for author pages should be the author's last name (lower case).

example:

barr

Below this is a pull down menu where you pick your template. With author pages please pick the template entitled Author Page.

The upper right hand corner of the box is where you move the new page you are creating. For an author page, make sure the page location is set to the category they write in (i.e. mystery). Then you can move the page so that it is in alphabetical order by the author's last name. This will place the author page you create in alphabetical order in the 'wiki pages' navigation bar to the left.

Author Page:
When you are done adding the author to the category page and have created an authors page, you need to link the author's name on the category page to their individual author page.
Remember to add the author to the 'wiki pages' navigation bar to the left (alphabetically by last name). The link in the navigation bar is their individual author page.

example:

Classics

When you click on the link above you will see the classics category page. Look to the left side navigation bar, you will see the authors listed.
After you see that click on Jane Austen's name in the list area and you will be linked to her author page.
You can also click on Jane Austen's name in the category list.

Lists:
Please put the list of works by an author in an unnumbered list using the wiki tools when you "EasyEdit" a page.

example:

  • The Fellowship of the Ring
  • The Two Towers
  • The Return of the King

Adding a Book to an Existing List:
If you are adding a book to an already existing list please make sure that you add it to the unnumbered list in the correct order. If the work is not yet printed please add forthcoming after the title. Please use parenthesis ( ) in this case because this piece of information is temporary.

example:

  • S is for Silence
  • T is for Trespass (forthcoming)

Series Note:
If there is a need to have a series note please place it in brackets [ ] before the series list.

example:

Series Note: [The books within the Dragon Prince and Dragon Star series should be read in order. They are one series split into two trilogies. One cannot read the last three books without the having read the first three.]

Dragon Prince Series

  • Dragon Prince
  • The Star Scroll
  • Sunrunner's Fire

Dragon Star Series

  • Stronghold
  • The Dragon Token
  • Dragonbowl

Short Stories:
Some series have one or two short story collections with the the series. You should add this note in brackets [ ].
If an author writes many short stories please see special case note below.

example:

A Gift of Dragons [a collection of short stories]

Alternative Titles:
Some books also have alternate titles when published in different countries; some United States titles for books differ from then United Kingdom titles. Again please use brackets.

example:

Diane Duane's

  • To Visit the Queen [also published as On Her Majesty's Wizardly Service]

Multiple Releases:
Some stories are in several different volumes released by an author, especially short stories. Brackets are used here again.

example:

Charles de Lint's

  • Seven Wild Sisters [also in Tapping the Dream Tree]

Special Cases:

  • There are some series, such as James Herriot's novels, where every book has a completely different title in the United Kingdom (where it was originally published) than in the United States. In cases like these, put the United States titles on the category page and the alternative titles will appear as a list on the individual author's page. So treat it like an alternate order for the series. If it is just one book with an alternate title or multiple releases (as shown above) it is fine to put it on the category page list.

  • Another special case is when a series has conflicting orders. For example, The Chronicles of Narnia has two different orders you can read the books in. The prefered order is the one that goes on the category page and the other order(s) are to be placed on the individual author page.

  • For example, The Chronicles of Narnia has two different orders you can read the series in.

C.S. Lewis
  • Chronicles of Narnia (Chronological Order)
  • The Magician's Nephew
  • The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe
  • The Horse & his Boy
  • Prince Caspian
  • The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
  • The Silver Chair
  • The Last Battle

  • Chronicles of Narnia (Publication Order)
  • The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe
  • Prince Caspian
  • The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
  • The Silver Chair
  • The Horse & his Boy
  • The Magician's Nephew
  • The Last Battle

  • So one of these orders would be put on the category page and the other one would only appear on the author page.

  • If an author has too many alternate release options (e.g. alternative titles, or multiple releases) these options will get there own lists on the author page.

  • Some authors wrote a lot of short stories (e.g. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle or O. Henry). In this case, a short story list should be created just like other book series lists. It should have a heading Short Stories and the stories should be listed in publication or series order (the rules for books series lists are the same and apply here [see above]).

Complete Author List:

This is a page on the wiki where all authors, no matter their category, are put in an alphabetical list. The author's name is linked to his/her individual author page.

example:

A
Susan Wittig Albert

Adding Keyword Tags:

All keyword tags should be in lower case for easier reference. When you create an author page make the author's last name a keyword tag .

example:

chandler

Font Sizes:

Category Page:
Author name: size 24, bolded, and underlined
Series name: size 14 and bolded
books: size 12

Author Page:
The font size is 12. If you have an alternate list order please remember to put it in an an unnumbered list. You need not bold or change the size of the font on the author page, if you do not wish to. If you are not sure how to make the author page look please see the information above and you can always look at already established author pages to see the format.

Complete Author List:
The font size is 12 for the author's name. The letters of the alphabet used to organize the authors' names are size 14 and bolded.

Discussion (Debates):

There are debates over preferred readings orders for many series such as Redwall and The Chronicles of Narnia. This is what discussion threads are for. Please always conduct yourself with decorum if you disagree with what list order is on the main category home page (this is the one most people will see) and what ones are secondary on the individual author home pages.

If an agreement cannot be reached because too many people disagree the administrators will step in and choose which order will stay on the main page and what one will only be viewed on the individual author page.
So be happy that they are both on the wiki in the first place and agree to disagree.
Remember you can always politely state your preference on you profile page.

Profile Pages:

You can use your profile page to put some information about yourself. You can also post a preferred order to a books series, if you do not agree with how they appear on a category page.
Another thing you can use your profile page for is to put a list of books you plan on readings, so that it is always available for you to refer to.
