Interesting & Unique Facts: James is one of the founders and leaders of a school of realism in fiction. He spent much of his life in England and became a British subject shortly before his death. He is primarily known for a series of major novels in which he portrayed the encounter of America with Europe.

James was an extraordinarily productive writer, in addition to his voluminous works of fiction he published articles and books of travel writing, biography, autobiography, criticism, and wrote plays, some of which were performed during his lifetime with moderate success. James was never married, and after settling in London he proclaimed himself "a bachelor" and regularly rejected suggestions that he marry.

James was particularly interested in what he called the "beautiful and blest nouvelle", or the longer form of short narrative. Many of his novels and works have been adapted to the screen. Three of James's novels were filmed by the team of Ismail Merchant and James Ivory: The Europeans (1978), The Bostonians (1984) and The Golden Bowl (2000).
